The Battle of the River Plate

CC33. The Battle of the River Plate

£6 + Add
The Battle of the River Plate took place on the 13ᵗʰ of December 1939, bringing the first victory of the Second World War and lifting the country's morale. For the Royal Navy this battle was an expression of the centuries old tradition of achieving mastery of the seas through offensive spirit in battle and a willingness to take risks.

The British Forces Philatelic Bureau, supported by the HMS Ajax and River Plate Veterans Association, has produced a special commemorative cover to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the River Plate.

The images featured on the cover were taken from the memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, unveiled earlier this year. It includes silhouettes and badges of the ships as well as the broad pennant of Commodore Harwood.

The 'Winston Churchill' stamp on the cover is cancelled using a unique BFPS numbered handstamp depicting the Royal Navy crown, which is found atop all ships' badges. The cover comes complete with a splendid A4 double-sided insert in full colour giving more information about the battle. The cover and insert are presented in a cellophane sleeve to create a high quality souvenir of a truly historic event.

There are two versions of this cover. The standard unsigned and a double signed version by survivors of the battle.

This is the standard version.
